Ideas and discussion of what to do with the CAN Bus ( i.e. XMDirect, iPod, Carputer, etc... )

HELP WITH UNLOCK VIDEO IN MOTION AND REAR VIEW CAMERA

Post by carlos1984 »

hi everyone ,

I have seen some devices sold online, like the Coasteltech Lockpick https://www.coastaletech.com/MYGIG.htm
pac bci-ch21 https://catalog.pac-audio.com/catalog/v ... n/bci-ch21
NAVIKS https://www.ebay.ca/itm/2008-2010-Dodge ... Zt&vxp=mtr

All of these device claim they can unlock Adds reverse camera input
Unlocks navigation entry while vehicle is in motion
Unlocks video while vehicle is in motion
A/V input capabilities
Provides VES activation
Works on all touchscreen radios (MyGig)

I have seen people on this wonderful site unlock the VES using the CANBUS command,

so I am thinking there must be a way to unlock or add reverse camera input and Unlocks video and nav inputs while vehicle is in motion.
Does anyone have any experience with this or have ideas how to do this?

Another question I have is , how do these devices do what they claim?

The interfaces act as a gateway. The interfaces go in between the radio and the vehicle. It splits the CAN bus wires so one side goes into the interface from the vehicle side and back out to the radio. We just look for certain CAN id's from the vehicle side and modify the data. Then we send it back out to the radio. So the radio thinks it's in reverse even though you're driving forward. All the while we let all the other CAN id's and data we don't care about pass through.

Most vehicles in the past that don't have back up cameras can have the radio programmed for back up camera. The radio requires just a handful of messages to enable it. As for the VES, It's been quite a long time since i reversed engineered those vehicles so i'm just going by memory but i believe it's just one message to turn on and off the VES.

So is this something you want to tackle on your own and figure out? You'll need a CAN bus analyzer to view the data. What I’ve used pretty much all my career is the Vehicle Spy software from Intrepidcs. The latest hardware I used from them is the Fire 2. You can go cheaper but you get what you paid for. I’ve used CAN Hacker software before and I have to say it’s a night and day difference.

You’ll need some kind of development kit that has a microcontroller with two CAN controllers. Something like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33013932875.html
Assuming your vehicle is newer with MSCAN and not the older LSFTCAN bus. I’ve actually bought purchased one a few days ago. It uses an STM32F407 from ST. You can use their affordable ST-Linkv2 programmer/debugger. They have free software STM32CubeIDE to write and compile your code.
